Running along a rocky ledge from its water source on the Coyroux stream, this 1.5 km irrigation canal is listed as a historic monument near your Corrèze campsite. Partially carved into the rock in the 12th century by the Cistercian monks of Obazine Abbey, the canal originally served several fishponds and mills while supplying running water to the monastery.

Where is the Canal des Moines located?

The Canal des Moines is one of Corrèze's iconic historical gems. This relic is located in the commune of Aubazines. The site is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Animals, bicycles, motorbikes, and strollers are also prohibited. However, visitors can choose from several walking routes, including a round trip along the canal that takes about an hour and a half or longer three-hour hiking loops.

Hiking at the Canal des Moines

Visitors can enjoy various walking options. For instance, a straightforward 1.5-hour hike begins in Aubazines, covering a distance of 3.86 km, with the possibility of returning to the starting point. The starting point is the village square (in the center), which has parking spaces available. With your back to the tourist office and the abbey on your left, head straight ahead. Take the first street on the left, then the first on the right; signs indicate the start of the walk at the intersection with Avenue Jean-Baptiste-Laumond. Follow the canal to the junction of a path that opens onto the canal. This same route is used to return after completing the loop via the calvary. For now, continue along the canal, enjoying the shade of the trees. At the canal’s source, you’ll find yourself in a dead end. On the right, a path ascends into the forest. The climb leads to Route D48 and up to the calvary. This rocky outcrop offers visitors a panoramic view of the valley. The walk continues westward. Begin the descent, cross the road again, and rejoin the path taken earlier. Finally, turn right and retrace your steps back to the village square parking area. A guided 1.5-hour tour costs €6 per person or €4 for children aged 6–13. Alternatively, visiting the site is free of charge.

Preparing for your hike

This beautiful hike allows you to admire stunning landscapes. The view from the calvary, in particular, provides an almost 360-degree panorama of the valley. The walk is short and easy, so heavy hiking boots are unnecessary. However, the tourist office recommends good sports shoes, as the climbs and descents can be steep. The village square is the starting point of the walk. Visitors will find a fountain there, along with a bar featuring a charming little terrace. Additionally, there are two restaurants and a bakery. For safety reasons, access to the Canal des Moines is prohibited for animals, bicycles, motor vehicles, and strollers. It is also advisable to bring paper IGN maps at a scale of 1:25,000 for this hike. For more information, contact the tourist office, especially regarding safety instructions.
