Located in Corrèze, an hour’s drive from Camping Le Gibanel in Argentat, south of Brive-la-Gaillarde, Turenne is a medieval village perched on a hilltop, crowned by the ruins of Turenne Castle. As one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France," Turenne is well worth a visit during your holiday in Corrèze.
Turenne, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France
Turenne is a small commune with only a few hundred inhabitants. Its fascinating history dates back to the 9th century. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the Viscounty of Turenne enjoyed complete autonomy, with Turenne as its powerful capital. It ruled over Limousin, Périgord, and Quercy. Turenne is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in France. The remains of Turenne Castle, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, along with the 17th-century church and several 15th- and 16th-century houses, make this village a must-see destination during your stay in Corrèze.
What to See in Turenne?
Although small, you’ll need a few hours to fully appreciate all the village has to offer.
Stroll Through the Village
Begin your visit to Turenne on foot, parking at the lot at the base of the village. As you climb the steep lanes, you’ll come across old houses, some of which date back to the 15th century. Notable among them are the Livet House, the Duchet House, the Cheyroux House, and the Linoire House. Continue to the Place des Halles, then turn right to admire the Notre-Dame-Saint-Pantaléon Church. Built in the Romanesque style (17th century), it features a gilded wooden altarpiece with three tiers. Return to the square before ascending to the castle via Rue Droite.
The Capuchin Chapel
Located just before the entrance to the castle, the Capuchin Chapel is worth a look. Its excellent state of preservation despite its age (built in 1643) makes it one of the must-see places in Turenne. Nowadays, it hosts exhibitions and sometimes concerts during the summer. It remains closed for the rest of the year.
Turenne Castle
Listed as a historical monument since 1840, this medieval castle sits at the very top of the village. Written records date back to the 10th century. Today, its most striking features are two massive towers: the round César Tower and the square Clock Tower. Between the two towers lies a beautiful French-style flower garden, especially pleasant to stroll through. The garden is listed in the French Parks and Gardens Guide. Naturally, little remains of the original castle. However, the guardroom in the Clock Tower houses a fine collection of Louis XIII salt chests, furniture, and some period objects. As for the panoramic view from the César Tower, it is stunning. You can see the verdant Corrèze countryside stretching out in all directions, sometimes even as far as the Auvergne mountains! Admission to the castle is €5.50 for adults and €3.80 for children over 10. Entry is free for children under 10. For more information about Turenne, you can visit the village's tourist office at Place du Général Pierre Crouzillac.
Where to Eat in Turenne
While visiting the village, you will find several good restaurants on your way up to the castle, such as La Maison des Chamoines, Les Capucins, the restaurant La Vicomté, and Café Raymond.
There are other beautiful villages in the region, like Collonges-la-Rouge and Curemonte, which we highly recommend visiting during your holiday in Corrèze.
