On a hillock at 350 meters above sea level, between Limousin and Périgord, stands the silhouette of Saint-Robert: an ancient Merovingian city, Saint-Robert is today classified among the “most beautiful villages of France”. In the 80’s, its charm and the preservation of its medieval look were the reason why it was chosen as a setting for the soap opera Des Grives aux loups, a television adaptation of Claude Michelet’s novels.
A visit to Saint-Robert, either on a stroll or with a guide booklet provided by the tourist office, will lead you to the discovery of charming alleys, seigneurial residences, fortified doors and a remarkable 12th century Romanesque church of which the choir and the transept remain. Fortified, the church also boasts a square tower with a keep function, a lantern for the dead and an imposing octagonal bell tower. Only a 16th century chapel, with fluted columns, testifies today to the former presence of the seigniorial castle of Verneuil. Several manors and fortified houses can still be admired in Saint-Robert, among which the Noailles pavilion built under Louis XII, the Aragon castle dating from the 14th century, the Beauroire castle, the Sens house, the Seguin house, or the Amarzit house. In the heart of Saint-Robert nestles the oldest building in the village, an old monastic building around which the village was built. You can also discover an old dovecote, an old post office, a wrought iron cross from the 15th century registered as a Historic Monument, old shops from the Middle Ages and the charming Saint-Maurice fountain.

Located about 1h10 from the Gibanel campground, the village of Saint-Robert is worth a day trip. There are several ways to visit the medieval city: by strolling, by taking a booklet, by following a guide, or by following a suggested itinerary. Three hiking trails are proposed to help you discover the essential sites of the village and its surrounding countryside. One leads you to the miraculous fountain of Saint-Maurice, the other one passes by the wash house of Tuffets, and the third one makes you discover the other perched villages of the surroundings. From June to September, the tourist office offers children a booklet of games to explore the village in a playful way.
The summer season is lively in Saint-Robert: flea markets and festive markets follow one another from June to September. The classical music festival of Saint-Robert has been a must since the 1970’s and is nationally renowned: taking advantage of the incredible acoustics of the church, it invites renowned artists throughout the summer. Other not-to-be-missed events include the August 15 votive festival, temporary painting and sculpture exhibitions, and night tours of the city.
